31 Days to Green Living day 12: become a vegetarian…
or at least substitute some vegetarian meals in during the week. Not only is eating less meat healthier for you but also drastically affects the planet.
It's no secret that big industrial beef and pork farms pollute water and threaten biodiversity. But did you know that the methane emitted by cows is 21 times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide? Just producing enough meat for one hamburger emits the same amount of greenhouse gas as a six-mile car ride. And this country, along with other Westernized nations, is one of the worst offenders: We eat an average of 8 ounces of meat per person daily, more than twice the amount consumed by people in developing countries.
Eating vegetarian cuts down considerably on the effects of global warming. Why? Meat and dairy production creates more carbon emissions than all those cars and trucks on the road.
Next time you are at the library or bookstore, check out some Vegetarian cookbooks to get some recipe ideas! Choose whole wheat pastas/grains, eggs, beans and cheese to pair with large servings of vegetables. You will feel so much better and it is considerable less money to eat vegetarian. I see myself going more vegetarian as time goes on, but my husband would never go for it completely, at least yet. Although, he has come a long way just in the last year with being open to more vegetarian meals and trying things we have never had before (not like he really has a choice since I do all the meal planning and cooking, he he). It’s ironic that when we met I was all about steak and potatoes and now it’s the least thing I crave!
